Chamber  Leadership  21  Update
Brenda and Karl Corbett, owners of SASHA Corporation, led the last SEBC Leadership 21 class  in an insightful session on “How to Communicate Expectations Effectively." Established in 1984, Sasha focuses on HR & employee retention, offering hands-on training for employees and front line supervisors.

The Corbetts defined an expectation as "a clear mental picture or clear belief in what is going to happen in the in future." The key to effectively communicating in the workplace is 'setting agreed-to expectations."

They explained the four steps to making an expectation a reality:

1)   Communicate  by spending time with the employee,
asking the 5 'W's" (who, what, when, where and why),
   explaining "why it matters" and
setting a specific timeframe and performance standard.

2)   Make a mutual commitment to the expectation by paraphrasing, clarifying and repeating what it is. Make sure there is mutual buy-in and ownership.

3)  Consequences must be in place, so there is a reward for meeting, or accountability  for not meeting  the expectation.

4)   Coaching through expectations requires feedback, recognition and, if necessary, re-identification. The benefits of this coaching:  outstanding opportunities to motivate, to listen and to learn how each individual can reach their own peak.

Excellent speakers with years of expertise, the Corbetts provided Leadership 21 with  effective tools and strategies for improving communication.
